Assisting an uninsured traveller with mounting medical bills in Belize

Traveller Assist was contacted by the mother of an uninsured traveller who was injured in a parachuting accident in Belize. Her medical bills were quickly mounting, and the traveller still required two further surgeries.

The hospital where the patient was being treated was not in our medical network, and we had no prior history with the hospital. We also did not have contracts in place for the hospital to accept our letters of guarantee.

Before accepting a hospital into our network, we carry out a thorough inspection of the facilities, and conduct our own due diligence. To do this, we sent a medical doctor from our medical network in nearby Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

While there, our medical doctor was able to assess the patient, and negotiate with the hospital a discounted daily bed rate. Traveller Assist was also able to negotiate the final medical bill down from USD $110,000 to $79,200.

As mentioned, this traveller was travelling without travel insurance and as a result, her mother was forced to remortgage their family home to pay her medical bills. The patient also required an air-ambulance transfer home from Belize to the UK which we arranged at a discounted rate through an air-charter company in our provider network.

The final bill for medical care costs, medical repatriation and assistance was in excess of USD $120,000. We were able to facilitate payments between the family and providers, and in total, Traveller Assist saved the family over $45,000.
